Attacks on education, pupils and staff around the world up by 40%, says study

Attacks on education worldwide increased by 40% between 2024 and 2025, with over 8,556 recorded incidents impacting students and staff. This surge resulted in at least 10,600 individuals being killed, injured, abducted, arrested, or otherwise harmed. The Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) reported these findings, noting that incidents occurred across 83 countries. The highest numbers of attacks were concentrated in Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Haiti, Palestine, and Ukraine. These attacks represent a significant threat to the safety and continuity of education for vulnerable populations globally, highlighting a critical issue in conflict zones and areas of instability.
