ASUS ROG XBOX Ally X20 Features OLED Screen, New Controls

ASUS has launched the ROG XBOX Ally X20, marking a significant upgrade in its handheld gaming lineup and celebrating ROG's 20th anniversary. This new flagship device, developed in partnership with Xbox, introduces a groundbreaking 7.4-inch ROG Nebula HDR display that utilizes a true OLED panel, a first for the Ally series. This OLED technology provides superior contrast with deep blacks and enhanced shadow detail, characteristic of the display type. The screen operates at a Full HD resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate, capable of reaching a peak brightness of 1,400 nits for HDR content and 600 nits for SDR. It holds VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification, along with Dolby Vision and Pantone validation, ensuring high visual fidelity. To further improve motion clarity and reduce visual artifacts, the display incorporates AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, offering a variable refresh rate range from 30Hz to 120Hz, and boasts an ultra-fast 0.2ms response time to minimize ghosting. The display's viewing area is expanded within the same device footprint due to a slimmer top bezel. For durability and improved outdoor usability, the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass and features an anti-reflection coating designed to reduce environmental glare by 65 percent compared to uncoated OLED panels. The control scheme has also undergone a substantial overhaul. The X20 is equipped with new magnetic TMR joysticks, which employ magnetic sensors instead of physical contacts. This design aims to eliminate the common issue of stick drift experienced in traditional joysticks and provides a precise three-percent deadzone. A new algorithm has been implemented to refine diagonal input accuracy. A unique feature is the Transforming D-pad, which can be manually rotated 90 degrees to switch between a traditional four-way cross, ideal for platforming games, and an eight-way input configuration better suited for fighting games. The ABXY buttons have been redesigned to sit flush with the device's chassis when pressed, offering a cleaner aesthetic and tactile feedback. The device is powered by the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor and includes an 80Wh battery, supporting AAA gaming performance within a Windows 11 environment. The inclusion of an 80Wh battery represents a substantial increase in capacity, promising longer gaming sessions on a single charge.
