Putin Warns of War as Europe Considers Ukraine Peacekeeping Force Amidst Intensified Russian Strikes

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a stern warning on Friday, stating that the deployment of European troops into Ukraine would constitute a direct war with Russia. This declaration was made during a summit of the BRICS group of emerging economies, an organization that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, and aims to foster economic cooperation among developing nations. Putin's remarks underscore the escalating tensions and the significant potential for wider conflict as some European leaders, including those within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), have begun to consider the possibility of sending a peacekeeping force to Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly characterized such a move as unacceptable, viewing it as a direct intervention.

Meanwhile, Russian forces have intensified their air campaign against Ukraine, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure. On Saturday, local officials reported that Russian strikes killed five civilians and wounded dozens across the country. In the city of Zaporizhzhia, a key industrial hub in southeastern Ukraine, Russian drones struck a residential area overnight, killing two people and wounding one, according to regional head Ivan Fedorov. Another person died and three were injured in strikes on Kryvyi Rih, a city in central Ukraine known for its industrial importance. In the Black Sea port of Odesa and its surrounding region, a "massive attack" overnight wounded 35 people. Regional head Oleh Kiper reported that a residential high-rise suffered the complete destruction of its upper floors, illustrating the destructive power of the assault. Later on Saturday, two individuals were killed in a Russian attack on a grocery store in the Zhytomyr region, west of Kyiv.

In response to the ongoing bombardments, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces had successfully struck two chemical industry facilities within Russia, located in the cities of Samara and Perm. While the governors of these regions had not immediately commented on the reported strikes, the independent Russian online news outlet Astra reported drone attacks targeting chemical plants in both Samara and Perm. These Ukrainian strikes represent a retaliatory or strategic move amidst the ongoing conflict and Russia's intensified aerial bombardments. Ukraine's power grid has been a particular target of Moscow's attacks, with officials indicating the intent to demoralize civilians ahead of winter by disrupting essential services.
