ARCHIVIO J.M.Ribot Installation Arrives at Dover Street Market Beijing

ARCHIVIO J.M.Ribot has launched an immersive special installation titled "A Body Without a Body" at Dover Street Market Beijing, located in Wangfujing Central. This exhibition coincides with the debut of the brand's 21st capsule collection and its 10th-anniversary capsule, named "The Hollow Carnival." Founded by designer Karim Fares, ARCHIVIO J.M.Ribot draws inspiration from an extensive archive of antique textiles, vintage clothing, and historical objects. The brand deliberately eschews rapid trend cycles, prioritizing slow, locally sourced Italian craftsmanship. This approach emphasizes the preservation of materials and the inherent traces of time, with elements like faded textures and mending stitches becoming integral to each garment. The "The Hollow Carnival" collection uses the remnants of a carnival as a metaphor for contemporary society, suggesting a pursuit of instant gratification and sensory pleasure that masks an underlying emptiness and melancholy. This concept forms the thematic core of the 21st collection. The "A Body Without a Body" installation is designed to interact with the site's architecture and visitor flow, incorporating the building itself as part of the artwork. The exhibition space is delineated by antique screens, which are further adorned with layered scraps of aged wallpaper. These layers are intended to evoke geological strata, symbolizing accumulated memories. At the installation's center, an antique sofa features vintage teddy bears that show signs of repair, alongside arrangements of dried flowers and ribbons, collectively representing intertwined childhood memories, emotions, and the passage of time. The titular work, "A Body Without a Body," consists of stacked clothing layers. Beneath weathered and torn fabrics, older garments are revealed, each textile layer acting as a sediment of memory. Although the original wearer is absent, the wear and mending on the fabric serve as remnants of human presence. The exhibition also showcases ARCHIVIO J.M.Ribot's two previous capsule collections, further detailing the brand's commitment to its archival and artisanal ethos. The brand's dedication to preserving the past through its designs is a central tenet of its philosophy, offering a counterpoint to the disposable nature of modern consumption.
