Apple Music Hall Opens in Battersea Power Station

Apple has officially opened Apple Music Hall, a new live music venue situated within London's iconic Battersea Power Station. This 600-capacity space is engineered to function as a comprehensive production facility, enabling artists to perform, record, and film a show all within the same location. The venue aims to bridge the gap between intimate small-room performances and large-scale, arena-grade productions by integrating advanced recording and broadcasting capabilities directly into the performance space. Every audience seat is positioned to offer a close proximity to the performer, while the venue's backend infrastructure is designed to accommodate the demands of a touring act. The stage itself is 38 feet wide and can be reconfigured to support both traditional front-facing performances and in-the-round setups, offering flexibility for various artistic presentations. A key feature of Apple Music Hall is its immersive audio system, comprising 48 speakers strategically placed throughout the room. This setup allows for performances to be experienced in Spatial Audio, providing an enveloping soundscape where fans hear the set as a fully immersive mix, deviating from standard front-of-house audio feeds. Beyond the performance aspect, the venue operates as a fully functional production facility. Behind the stage, two dedicated recording and mix studios are built to professional standards. These studios are equipped to capture any performance as a multitrack recording and mix it in Spatial Audio, with the option for live mixing or post-show adjustments. The visual production capabilities are equally robust, with the space hardwired to support 16 or more cameras. These cameras feed into a purpose-built broadcast control room, featuring infrastructure that can simultaneously handle iPhone video capture alongside traditional broadcast rigs. This integrated pipeline allows for the simultaneous output of a Spatial Audio recording, a broadcast-ready mix, and multicamera video footage from a single show. Furthermore, performances can be livestreamed globally, extending the reach of artists to audiences beyond London. The architectural design of Apple Music Hall thoughtfully incorporates elements of its historic host building, Battersea Power Station, rather than attempting to obscure them, creating a unique aesthetic that blends modern functionality with industrial heritage.
