Apple Unveils New M4 Chip for iPad Pro

Apple announced its new M4 chip on May 7, 2024, debuting it in the latest generation of iPad Pro models. This marks the first time an iPad has launched with a chip not previously seen in an iPhone or Mac, signaling a strategic shift in Apple's silicon roadmap. The M4 chip is manufactured using a second-generation 3-nanometer process technology, which contributes to its improved performance and power efficiency. Apple claims this process allows the M4 to deliver performance comparable to the M2 chip while consuming half the power. The display engine has also been upgraded to support a single-layer 4K ProRes encode and decode, further enhancing its capabilities for professional video workflows. The introduction of the M4 chip in the new iPad Pro models, which also feature a new tandem OLED display technology called Ultra Retina XDR, positions these devices as powerful tools for creative professionals and users demanding high performance for demanding tasks, including AI-powered applications and advanced graphics rendering.
