Apple May Launch Camera AirPods at iPhone 18 Pro Event

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch AirPods equipped with integrated cameras, potentially at the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro event next month. This rumored hardware development aims to expand Apple's wearable health and accessibility ecosystem by incorporating visual intelligence capabilities. According to reports from Bloomberg, these new AirPods will enable users to ask Siri contextual questions about their immediate surroundings. The project, internally codenamed B790, was recently discovered in the iOS 27 beta code, indicating that development is significantly advanced, potentially ahead of a competing camera-equipped prototype anticipated for a 2027 release. Apple engineers have designed these internal sensors specifically for artificial intelligence processing, rather than for traditional photography or video recording. The earbuds are expected to capture low-resolution data to assist with physical navigation and to answer visual inquiries related to specific tasks. A primary application for this new hardware is the enhancement of accessibility software. Earlier in the year, Apple previewed substantial artificial intelligence upgrades for its VoiceOver and Magnifier tools. The Image Explorer feature, currently available, allows individuals who are blind or have low vision to obtain detailed descriptions of their environment through a smartphone camera's viewfinder. Users can interact with this feature by pressing a physical button to ask follow-up questions in natural language about particular objects in their vicinity. The integration of this capability directly into a wearable audio device would facilitate a completely hands-free experience, removing the necessity of holding up a smartphone screen. To mitigate privacy concerns associated with wearable cameras, the AirPods are expected to incorporate a small LED light that will illuminate whenever the image sensors are actively operating. This visual indicator is intended to provide users with immediate confirmation that the camera is in use. The visual sensors are designed to provide Siri with contextual information about objects and environments, thereby enhancing its ability to understand and respond to user queries in a more informed manner.
