Anne Imhof Premieres 'House of Swans' Ballet in Hong Kong

German artist Anne Imhof is set to unveil her latest exhibition, 'House of Swans,' at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong on September 25. This marks Imhof's first major solo exhibition in Asia and features a significant commission of new works. The exhibition will encompass a diverse range of artistic mediums, including oil paintings, bronze sculptures, sonic installations, and video art. Curated by Ying Kwok and Tiffany Leung, 'House of Swans' is designed to create a series of "charged encounters" that delve into themes of "bodily presence, restriction, and authority," as described by Tai Kwun. The exhibition will unfold across the institution's three floors, offering a comprehensive exploration of Imhof's artistic vision.

A central component of the exhibition is the premiere of a titular ballet performance, also named 'House of Swans.' This ballet represents Imhof's first foray into choreographing a full ballet production. The performance builds upon the narrative lore introduced in Imhof's 2025 New York performance, 'DOOM.' The 'House of Swans' ballet follows the journey of a heroine navigating her path to love amidst a "chaotic cityscape" in an "imagined future." The production will feature dancers and musicians from the Hong Kong Ballet, alongside American ballet dancer Devon Teuscher, who is also Imhof's partner. The collaboration with Hong Kong Ballet signifies a significant cultural exchange and artistic endeavor.

The 'House of Swans' ballet draws inspiration from the final ballet sequence of Imhof's previous, large-scale performance, 'DOOM.' 'DOOM' itself was loosely based on Shakespeare's 'Romeo and Juliet,' a production where Imhof first met Devon Teuscher. This new ballet performance will explore the origin story of the fictional "Swans" faction, which is presented as embodying hope within the narrative structure, serving as the third house to the original Capulet-Montague factions established in 'DOOM.' The performance also pays homage to classical ballets such as 'Swan Lake' and 'Giselle,' integrating their thematic and aesthetic elements into Imhof's contemporary interpretation.

In a recent interview, Imhof expressed her interest in classical forms like ballet, stating her intention to "tell different stories" through them. She further commented on the use of ballet as a "soft power tool" by autocrats, asserting that this does not preclude its reclamation for other narratives. Imhof views her engagement with ballet as an "attempt to claim it back" for broader artistic expression. The exhibition 'House of Swans' will be accessible to the public from September 25, 2024, through January 3, 2027, with special performances scheduled throughout its run. The exhibition's extended duration allows ample opportunity for audiences to engage with Imhof's multifaceted artistic presentation.
