This alteration is particularly relevant for travelers on American's new Airbus A321XLR aircraft, where access to the new Flagship Suites on top cross-country routes may become less accessible for elite members via complimentary upgrades. The AAdvantage program typically grants elite status members complimentary upgrades to available premium seats on domestic flights and certain short-haul international routes. Historically, this often meant an upgrade to a domestic first-class seat. The significant benefit that is now being curtailed was the complimentary upgrade to lie-flat business class seats on the limited number of domestic routes where these were available. The airline's rationale for this policy shift centers on the increasing availability of premium economy as a distinct cabin class. Passengers who booked an economy seat and are flying on a domestic route where premium economy is sold will now be eligible for an upgrade to premium economy, rather than the previously available business class.
