American Airlines Adds 3 New European Destinations

American Airlines is expanding its international network by adding three new European destinations and a total of seven new international routes for its 2027 summer travel schedule. The newly added European cities are Vienna, Austria; Reykjavik, Iceland; and Porto, Portugal. These additions are part of a broader expansion that also includes increased service to existing European hubs and a restoration of transpacific service.

Beyond the new European cities, American Airlines is enhancing service to established destinations. Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Nice, France, which the airline already serves, will each receive additional flights to different hubs. A significant transpacific route is also being reintroduced: service from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Tokyo's Narita Airport (NRT) will resume on March 19, 2027, utilizing a Boeing 787-9 aircraft. American Airlines had previously announced plans to return to Narita from Chicago earlier in the summer, a route that directly competes with a similar announcement made by United Airlines this year.

From Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), service to Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) will begin on May 27, 2027, operated by a Boeing 777-200ER. Chicago O'Hare (ORD) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) starts March 19, 2027, with a Boeing 787-9. New York's JFK International Airport (JFK) will see new service to Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) starting March 28, 2027, using an Airbus A321XLR, and to Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) beginning May 6, 2027, also with an Airbus A321XLR. JFK will also receive a fourth daily flight to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) starting March 28, 2027, on a Boeing 787-9 (Flagship).

From Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), American Airlines will launch service to Porto Airport (OPO) in Portugal on March 28, 2027, with an Airbus A321XLR. Additionally, PHL will gain new routes to Reykjavik via Keflavík International Airport (KEF) in Iceland, commencing May 27, 2027, on an Airbus A321neo, and to Vienna International Airport (VIE), starting May 6, 2027, utilizing an Airbus A321XLR. The airline's strategic use of the Airbus A321XLR is highlighted, as Porto was previously identified as one of the initial European destinations for this new aircraft type, which entered service last year.
