America just buried a message for people living in 2276. Some of the items inside are wild

America's Time Capsule was sealed this week, containing items intended to be opened in 2276, marking the nation's 250th anniversary. The capsule, a 900-pound steel cylinder constructed from indium, is designed to withstand environmental conditions for 250 years and will be housed within a protective stainless steel bell jar. This commemorative project is organized by America250, an entity established by Congress in 2016 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which occurs on July 4, 2026. The capsule was sealed at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Rosie Rios, the America250 chair, stated that the capsule preserves a record of the current moment in American history, reflecting care, pride, and optimism for future generations. The contents include a molecular safety deposit box and a glass Coca-Cola bottle, among other items intended to represent the country at this juncture, despite current societal challenges such as an affordability crisis and political polarization.
