America Isn’t Sweating Climate Change

A significant portion of Americans express low concern regarding climate change, according to a recent survey conducted by the University of Chicago's Energy Policy Institute and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The poll, released in early 2024, found that only 28% of U.S. adults consider climate change a very serious problem, with an additional 32% viewing it as somewhat serious. This indicates a prevailing sentiment where a majority of the population does not rank climate change as a top-tier personal concern, despite scientific consensus on its escalating impacts. The survey also revealed demographic variations in concern levels, with younger adults and those in urban areas tending to express higher levels of worry compared to older individuals and those in rural communities. Despite the relatively low overall concern, the research did note that a majority of Americans, 57%, believe the Earth's climate is changing. However, the perceived urgency and personal impact of this change appear to be less pronounced for many.
