DC Studios Pauses 'Waller' Series and 'Paradise Lost' Prequel

DC Studios has officially put on hold active development for two previously announced television projects: an untitled standalone series centered on the character Amanda Waller, and a prequel to the "Wonder Woman" film titled "Paradise Lost." Variety confirmed this development, noting that representatives for DC Studios declined to provide a comment regarding the status of these projects. The "Waller" series was initially reported in July 2023, with Viola Davis slated to reprise her role as the formidable government operative.

The "Waller" series was envisioned as a continuation of the character's storyline from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films, particularly following her involvement in "The Suicide Squad" (2021) and the "Peacemaker" spin-off series. Viola Davis, an Academy Award-winning actress, was attached to star and executive produce the project. The series was expected to explore Waller's operations and her complex moral landscape within the clandestine world of metahuman affairs. The decision to pause its development signifies a shift in DC Studios' strategic priorities under the new leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who took over as co-CEOs and co-chairs of DC Studios in November 2022.

Similarly, "Paradise Lost" was intended to serve as a prequel to the critically acclaimed 2017 film "Wonder Woman." The project was described as a "Game of Thrones-esque" political thriller set on Themyscira, the Amazonian island home of Diana Prince. The series aimed to explore the origins of the Amazons and the political machinations within their society before the events of the "Wonder Woman" film. The initial announcement of "Paradise Lost" was made in December 2022, with Patty Jenkins, the director of the "Wonder Woman" films, initially attached to the project. However, reports later indicated that Jenkins had departed the project, leading to further uncertainty about its future.

The shelving of these two projects aligns with a broader restructuring of the DC film and television universe. Gunn and Safran have been working to establish a cohesive narrative across various media, including film, television, and animation, under a new banner known as the DC Universe (DCU). This initiative involves reboots and new interpretations of established characters, with a focus on a unified storyline.
