GM Cars to Integrate Tesla Supercharger Ports by 2027

General Motors announced on November 28, 2023, that all its electric vehicles (EVs) will be equipped with a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port starting with the 2027 model year. This integration will allow GM's entire lineup of Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC electric vehicles to directly utilize Tesla's Supercharger network, as well as other charging stations that adopt the NACS standard. The move aims to significantly enhance the charging convenience and accessibility for GM's EV customers across the United States and Canada.

This strategic decision by GM follows a broader trend in the automotive industry towards standardizing charging infrastructure. Previously, EVs from manufacturers other than Tesla required adapters to access Tesla's extensive Supercharger network. The inclusion of a native NACS port eliminates the need for such adapters, simplifying the charging process for drivers. This means that owners of 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV, and future GM EVs will be able to plug in and charge without any additional equipment.

The NACS, originally developed by Tesla, has become a de facto standard for EV charging in North America. Many automakers, including Ford, Rivian, and Volvo, have already announced plans to adopt NACS ports in their future vehicles. GM's commitment to integrating NACS across its entire EV portfolio by 2027 underscores the growing importance of this standard for widespread EV adoption. The company stated that this move is expected to provide GM customers with access to tens of thousands of additional charging points.

In addition to the native NACS port integration, GM also confirmed that it will begin offering adapters for its current EV owners to access Tesla Superchargers starting in 2024. This phased approach ensures that existing GM EV drivers can also benefit from the expanded charging network before the full integration of NACS ports in new vehicles. The company has not yet disclosed the pricing for these adapters. The partnership with Tesla and the adoption of NACS are critical steps for GM as it aims to accelerate its transition to an all-electric future and meet its ambitious electrification goals, which include launching 30 new EVs globally by 2025 and phasing out gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035.
