Ford Rehires Experienced Engineers to Solve Quality Issues

Ford Motor Company announced this week that artificial intelligence alone could not resolve its quality control issues, a surprising confession amidst widespread industry adoption of AI. The automaker, which logged a record number of recalls in 2025 and has already issued 51 recalls this year, highlighted a significant improvement in its annual vehicle quality survey. Ford moved up from 10th place to rank well ahead of mass-market competitors, a turnaround attributed to rehiring its most experienced engineers.

Ford VP Charles Poon stated that while AI is a valuable tool, its effectiveness depends on the quality of training data. He acknowledged that the company had previously neglected the experience of its most knowledgeable engineers, many of whom have decades of experience across multiple product cycles. Over the past three years, Ford has reportedly hired or brought back 350 "gray beard" engineers, sourcing talent from both former employees and individuals who worked with suppliers. These veteran engineers are credited with transferring their expertise to younger workers and enhancing the company's AI-powered quality tools.

Poon further explained that the company mistakenly believed that simply implementing AI and feeding it design requirements would automatically result in a high-quality product. According to a Bloomberg report, a key reason for the ineffectiveness of Ford's AI tools was the failure to integrate institutional knowledge and the expertise of its seasoned technicians. This strategic shift underscores a recognition that human experience remains critical in complementing and guiding advanced technological solutions for complex manufacturing challenges.
