After battling armed attacks, Mauritania attempts to revive tourism

Mauritania's tourism sector is showing signs of recovery following years of disruption caused by armed attacks. The country experienced a surge in terrorist incidents linked to al-Qaeda from the mid-2000s, which significantly deterred international visitors. However, a series of robust security measures implemented by the Mauritanian government have effectively curbed these threats. These measures included increased military presence in sensitive areas, enhanced border controls, and intelligence-sharing agreements with regional partners. The success of these security operations has led to a notable decrease in attacks, creating a more stable environment for tourism to rebound. The Mauritanian Ministry of Culture and Tourism has reported a gradual increase in tourist arrivals in the past two years, with a 15% rise observed in 2023 compared to 2022. Efforts are now focused on rebuilding the country's image as a safe destination, with targeted marketing campaigns highlighting Mauritania's rich cultural heritage, diverse landscapes including the Sahara Desert and the Atlantic coast, and unique historical sites like the ancient city of Chinguetti. The government is also investing in infrastructure development, such as improving road networks and hotel facilities, to enhance the visitor experience and attract a wider range of tourists, including those interested in ecotourism and adventure travel.
