Dan Nelken's Photograph Captures Ugandan Quarry Worker's Strength

Photographer Dan Nelken's acclaimed image captures Janet, a Ugandan quarry worker, carrying a load of rocks on her head, a testament to her strength and determination. Janet, who has been working in a local quarry for a decade, is the primary breadwinner for her family of eight children. Her husband, who previously worked as a boda-boda taxi driver, lost a leg, making Janet the sole provider. She stated, "I am now the husband in this home," underscoring her pivotal role in supporting her household.

Nelken's journey to this powerful photograph began in 2017 when his wife, Adele Brown, was invited to spend three weeks at a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Gulu, Uganda. Brown's mission was to teach critical thinking skills to blind high school students. Nelken accompanied her to document the NGO's activities, which led him to become fascinated by the town's bustling main market. Vendors at this market sold a variety of goods, including used clothing, fruits, and firewood.

To capture portraits of the market vendors, Nelken sought guidance from Ugandan teachers on how to approach individuals. He was advised to offer a modest "model fee" after obtaining explicit permission. Emmanuel, one of the students Brown was teaching, volunteered to assist Nelken. Emmanuel would accompany Nelken to the market and, upon identifying a vendor Nelken wished to photograph, would approach them to seek consent. While many vendors agreed to be photographed, Nelken initially felt disappointed with the results upon returning to New York, viewing it as another well-intentioned project that had reached its conclusion.

However, the photograph of Janet transcended this initial disappointment, becoming recognized as Dan Nelken's best work. The image not only documents the arduous labor of quarry work but also tells a profound story of female resilience, economic necessity, and familial responsibility in the face of adversity. The context of Janet's life, her husband's disability, and her role as the sole provider imbue the photograph with a deep emotional resonance, transforming a documentary image into a powerful narrative of human spirit.
