A surprising pregnancy trend is alarming health experts

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a report indicating an increase in alcohol consumption among pregnant women in the United States. Data collected between 2021 and 2024 shows that 15.2% of pregnant women reported drinking, an increase from 13.5% reported in data from 2018 to 2020. This trend appears to have emerged alongside a broader rise in alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. The more recent surveys also revealed that 4.9% of pregnant women engaged in binge drinking, defined as consuming four or more alcoholic drinks at once, and 2.2% reported heavy drinking, defined as consuming eight or more alcoholic drinks within a week. Among pregnant women who reported drinking, one-third also reported binge drinking, and nearly 15% reported heavy drinking. The report identified unmarried pregnant women and those experiencing frequent mental distress as the groups most likely to report alcohol use, despite known risks to fetal development. Researchers suggest alcohol may be used as a coping mechanism for stress, potentially exacerbating negative feelings, and emphasize the importance of behavioral health screening and support within prenatal care. The study utilized government health data from telephone surveys but acknowledged limitations, including the possibility that some reported drinking occurred before participants knew they were pregnant.
