Florida Citrus Grove Faces Rezoning for Golf Course Amid Resident Opposition

In Naples, Florida, the South Naples Citrus Grove, a long-standing local business known for its citrus products, is slated for closure, initiating a contentious debate over its 169-acre property. Developer SWJR Naples LLC has proposed rezoning the agricultural land to construct a private golf course, a move that has ignited fierce opposition from nearby residents and environmental groups. The area is characterized by its "Florida Forever" conservation boundary, which includes protected state forests frequented by wildlife such as black bears and Florida panthers.

Residents are vehemently opposing the golf course development, citing concerns about noise pollution, increased traffic from construction and maintenance vehicles, and the disruption of the area's peaceful, bucolic atmosphere. Gwen Ransone, a local resident, stated her intention to move if the rezoning is approved, emphasizing her desire for "peace and quiet" which she believes the golf course would eliminate. The potential for increased home values due to proximity to high-level golf courses is a factor, but for many, the environmental and lifestyle impacts outweigh potential financial gains.

Earlier in 2026, SWJR Naples LLC had also proposed rezoning the land for up to 423 homes, including income-restricted housing. This proposal was met with significant backlash, with residents organizing through social media and attending county meetings to voice their objections. Susan Sca, a resident involved in organizing opposition, rallied approximately 70 speakers for a January commissioners' meeting to protest the housing development. The current golf course proposal continues to face similar, strong community resistance, with no resolution reached at recent neighborhood planning meetings.
