Interpol announced on May 23, 2024, that its "Operation First Light" resulted in 5,811 arrests across 97 countries, targeting transnational organized crime. This global sweep successfully intercepted $293 million in illicit funds, with a significant portion linked to romance scams. One notable case involved a 20-year-old individual in Thailand whose cryptocurrency wallet was found to have moved approximately $123 million in funds derived from romance scams.

The operation, which ran from March 1 to April 30, 2024, focused on dismantling criminal networks involved in various illicit activities, including fraud, money laundering, and cybercrime. The success of Operation First Light highlights the increasing interconnectedness of criminal enterprises and the challenges law enforcement faces in tracking digital assets.
