Some diesel fuel pumps in California have reached their maximum display price of $9.999 per gallon, a situation exacerbated by the state's average diesel price climbing to $7.91 per gallon as of Thursday. GasBuddy, a fuel-tracking firm, confirmed that this $9.999 price point was observed on pumps in Serra Mesa, a suburb of San Diego, on Wednesday, and the company is investigating similar reports from other locations. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, indicated that in some instances, stations might display this maximum price to signal that diesel fuel is temporarily unavailable, a practice to deter drivers when supplies are depleted. However, it is undeniable that several California stations are currently charging prices exceeding $9 per gallon for diesel. Nationally, the average price for diesel fuel in the U.S. surpassed $6 per gallon this week for the first time in history. De Haan anticipates that the national diesel average could realistically reach $7 per gallon in the coming weeks, stating that there are "no signs of any improvement" and "more signs of escalation," indicating a worsening trend. He expressed that the initial reports of $9.999 prices were chilling, as this price point is now a realistic possibility. De Haan also noted the need for clarification regarding whether fueling stations would be legally permitted to adjust their digital software to charge over $10 per gallon or to implement alternative pricing methods, such as charging by the half-gallon. This surge in California's diesel prices occurs concurrently with a global increase in crude oil and fuel prices. These worldwide price hikes are attributed to escalating military tensions in the Middle East and the renewed threat of disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical oil transit bottleneck. While U.S. diesel prices are reaching record highs, the global situation is reportedly more severe, with projections of fuel shortages in various regions, higher prices, and contributing to inflationary pressures.
