2028 Rivian R2

2028 Rivian R2

The 2028 Rivian R2 electric SUV will start at $47,000, with deliveries expected in the second half of 2026. Rivian announced the R2 on March 7, 2024, positioning it as a more accessible option below the R1S and R1T models. The R2 features a minimalist interior with a single horizontal display screen and a large front trunk, or "frunk." It will offer three powertrain configurations: a single-motor rear-wheel-drive, a dual-motor all-wheel-drive, and a tri-motor all-wheel-drive performance version. The tri-motor variant is projected to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds. Rivian stated the R2 will have a range exceeding 300 miles on a single charge, though the specific battery size has not been disclosed. The vehicle will support bidirectional charging, allowing it to power external devices or even a home during an outage. Rivian also revealed that the R2 will feature a new battery architecture that is more thermally efficient and easier to service. The company emphasized its commitment to sustainability, with plans to use recycled materials in the R2's construction. The R2's design includes a rear liftgate that can be lowered for a more open cargo area, and all windows, including the rear quarter windows, will roll down. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe highlighted the R2's capability for outdoor adventures and its integration with Rivian's charging network, which is being opened to other EV manufacturers.
