Widow’s Bay Sets Comedy Record with 14 Emmy Wins

Apple TV+'s "Widow's Bay" achieved a historic milestone at the 2026 Emmy Awards on Monday night, setting a new single-season record for a comedy series with a total of 14 wins. This unprecedented achievement included the coveted award for Best Comedy Series and a Best Actor win for its star, Matthew Rhys. Rhys himself had a remarkable individual night, personally collecting three trophies. He was recognized as best actor in a comedy for his role in "Widow's Bay" and also secured the award for best actor in a limited series for his performance in "The Beast in Me." This dual win makes Rhys the first man to win two leading actor categories in the same year. Furthermore, as an executive producer for "Widow's Bay," he also received one of the best comedy series trophies.

"Widow's Bay," created by Katie Dippold, is a first-season series that blends comedy and horror, depicting a New England island community and its mayor, played by Rhys, confronting an ancient curse. Dippold, accepting the award for Best Comedy Series, expressed gratitude to Apple for supporting their "crazy, creative swing" and allowing them to produce what she described as a "weird show." The series' dominance extended to nearly every other comedy category, with "Widow's Bay" sweeping all awards except for those secured by other shows. This performance broke the previous comedy series record of 13 wins, which was set the prior year by "The Studio."

The 2026 Emmy Awards also saw other notable wins. HBO Max's "The Pitt," an emergency room drama, won Best Drama Series for the second consecutive year, and its star Noah Wyle repeated as Best Actor in a Drama. However, "The Pitt" underperformed expectations by winning no other awards. Rhea Seehorn received the award for Best Actress in a Drama for her role in "Pluribus." Jean Smart achieved a significant career milestone by winning her fifth Best Actress in a Comedy award for the fifth and final season of "Hacks." Smart's win is particularly noteworthy as no actor had previously won an Emmy every year for a series that spanned more than three seasons until her achievement on Monday.

Apple TV+ has solidified its position as a dominant force in the Emmy comedy categories. In the past six seasons, the streaming service has secured the Best Comedy Series award four times, with "Widow's Bay," "The Studio," and "Ted Lasso" contributing to this impressive track record. While "The Studio" and "Ted Lasso" were not eligible for awards this year as they were between seasons, "Widow's Bay"'s record-breaking performance underscores Apple TV+'s continued success in producing critically acclaimed comedy programming. The series also received an award for directing, further highlighting its comprehensive success across multiple creative and performance categories.
