Penn State Fraternities Implicated in Major Cocaine Trafficking Ring, Authorities Announce

Authorities have brought criminal charges against thirteen former or current Penn State University students, alleging their participation in a significant cocaine trafficking ring that operated with the involvement of two fraternities. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, led by Attorney General Dave Sunday, revealed details of the operation at a press conference on Monday. According to the office, two individuals within the charged group served as the primary suppliers, orchestrating routine trips to major metropolitan hubs like Philadelphia and New York City to acquire substantial quantities of cocaine.

This illicit drug was then primarily processed and packaged within the off-campus residences of the Sigma Chi and Delta Upsilon fraternity chapters. The distribution network predominantly targeted the student population at Penn State University. Attorney General Dave Sunday characterized the organization as an "upper level trafficking organization for this region in Pennsylvania," underscoring the gravity and sophistication of the criminal enterprise. He further elaborated on the disturbing tactics employed, stating that some fraternity pledges were allegedly indoctrinated into the operation by being compelled to cut and bag cocaine as part of their fraternity initiation process, a practice he deemed "very serious criminal conduct" and "nothing junior or childlike."

In total, fourteen defendants have been charged. Thirteen of these individuals were identified as Penn State University students at or around the time the alleged crimes occurred, which spanned from 2023 to 2024. At least four of the defendants are currently enrolled students. The charges vary in severity: four defendants face felony charges including corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and other offenses. A fifth defendant is charged with felony conspiracy and additional crimes. Eight other defendants, described as student-aged, are facing misdemeanor counts, such as drug possession. Notably, one defendant, who is the father of a Penn State student, is accused of tampering with evidence and hindering the ongoing investigation.

In response to these serious allegations, Penn State University has taken immediate action. The university announced that it is placing the Delta Upsilon fraternity chapter on interim suspension while it conducts its own internal investigation into the matter. The university also clarified that the Sigma Chi fraternity chapter at Penn State is not officially recognized and operates independently of the university's oversight. The Executive Director of Delta Upsilon, Justin Kirk, issued a statement acknowledging the situation and the international fraternity's awareness of the charges.
