Google Unveils Gemini 1.5 Pro With 1 Million Token Context Window

Google announced Gemini 1.5 Pro, a new flagship model, on February 15, 2024, featuring a groundbreaking 1 million token context window. This substantial increase from previous models allows Gemini 1.5 Pro to process and reason over significantly larger amounts of information, including entire codebases, multiple lengthy documents, or hours of video. The model is currently available in a limited preview for developers and enterprise customers via the Google AI Studio and Vertex AI platforms.

During the limited preview, developers can access a 128,000 token context window, with the full 1 million token capacity rolling out to select customers in the coming weeks. Google highlighted the model's performance on various benchmarks, noting that Gemini 1.5 Pro achieved performance comparable to Gemini 1.0 Pro across a range of tasks, despite its vastly expanded context window. Gemini 1.5 Pro utilizes a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, which Google states contributes to its enhanced performance and efficiency. The model also demonstrates strong multimodal reasoning capabilities, able to understand and process text, images, audio, and video inputs simultaneously.

Google showcased several use cases for the 1 million token context window, including analyzing a 400-page document in seconds, processing 11 hours of video, and understanding a 30,000-line codebase. The company emphasized that this capability opens up new possibilities for developers in areas such as complex data analysis, long-form content summarization, and sophisticated code understanding.
