Royal Shakespeare Company Reimagines Othello as Black Lesbian

The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) has announced a groundbreaking reimagining of William Shakespeare's tragedy, "Othello." The production, set to open in the Swan Theatre on February 13, 2027, will feature a Black lesbian in the central role of Othello. This marks a significant departure from traditional interpretations of the character.

Sharon D. Clarke has been cast as Othello, with Monique Touko taking on the directorial duties. The production's setting has also been updated, relocating the narrative to a climate-threatened future.
